Frequently Asked QuestionsHere Are The Answers To Some Of The Most Commonly Asked Questions

From time to time we are asked questions relating to our competitions and also for further clarification regarding the competition rules. So we thought that it would be a good idea to include this page with the answers to some of the most common questions we get asked.

If you have a specific question and can't find the answer, then please feel free to contact us and we will not only answer you as soon as possible but we may also add it to the list below.

  • Can I enter more than one class? +

Yes of course! The great thing is that, unlike going out to compete, you can actually ride in more than two competitions! However, if you are riding the same horse, you can only enter one level below your highest entry. So for example, if you have entered a Novice class, you can still ride the Prelim, but not the Intro. Be sure to check the class restriction (if any). You will find the lower level tests may have a restriction. This restriction is in place so that it is fairer to those that have never ridden a test before. If you have come first, second or third in a dressage or eventing competition, please do check the classes you are entering. Any restrictions will be clearly marked.
  • Do I get British Dressage points? +

Not at all, you will not incur any BD points as these are unaffiliated classes.
  • Where can I buy my test sheet from? +

Test sheets are available at minimal cost from:
    The British Dressage Online Shop
    Dressage Diagrams
You can select tests with or without diagrams. We personally like the laminated tests with diagrams!
You can pay and print off your sheet immediately if you wish.
  • What tack does my horse need? +

You can ride in your normal everyday tack. Please check out the ‘Rules’ as you cannot ride with martingales, side reins, etc. , but you can ride with neck straps, etc.
  • Do I have to have my horse plaited? +

No, just as you don’t really have to plait for many of the BD competitions. However, plaiting in itself can help you mentally prepare and make the switch from your general riding to competing. Just plaiting your horse or pony often brings about a certain ‘excitement’ and expectation. This also goes for yourself, if you ride in your best gear, often you feel that this gives you that extra ‘boost’. Many people find this extra ‘boost’ helps their performance. It is entirely up to you though and the judge is only judging your riding and the way the horse performs the test.
  • Do I have to wear my competition gear? +

As above, the answer is no, the judge is only focused on your riding and the horse. It is often seen though that just putting on your best gear steps up your performance a gear or two, but it is entirely up to you and you need to feel comfortable. Please do not wear very baggy clothes as the judge does need to see your riding!
  • Can I video my test on a phone or tablet? +

Absolutely! The whole point of these online competitions is to make it as easy as possible to enter, therefore enabling everyone a chance to compete and a chance to develop their riding. Make sure your phone or tablet is held so to shoot your video on ‘LANDSCAPE’ (turn it on its side!). We can then see the test in full. Make sure we can see the whole arena. Have a look at ‘Videoing Your Test’ on the Home page. If you are using an Apple device that does not have a zoom function, you can purchase MoviePro (available from the App Store). Install this and you can use it on any Apple device. It will give you an acceptable zoom feature.
